Introduction
This college was established to accommodate long-term development in the humanities, languages and arts, to integrate theories with practice and to enhance cultural and social diversity.

Established in 1956, the Humanities and Sciences College had three subordinate departments – Chinese Literature, Mathematics and Physics. Later, another two departments were set up: the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature in 1967, and the History Department in 1969, so that the college was split into two new ones, the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
The College of Liberal Arts gradually expanded its programs, including evening undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs. In addition, in 2001 this college was joined by the Department of Taiwanese Literature.
In 1996, the evening undergraduate programs were stopped, and another type of continuous education program was set up, the so-called in-service master’s programs. However, these programs in History, Chinese Literature, and Foreign Languages & Literature were also stopped in 2010. Moreover, the master’s program in Foreign Languages and Literature eventually became so big that it was divided into two sections in 2004, namely Literature and Linguistics.
In this college, all the undergraduate programs last for four years. The master’s programs take one to four years to complete, and doctoral programs last from two to seven years.
