Hsiu-Chi Building

Hsiu-Chi Building is the main facility for the College of Liberal Arts. The office of the college is situated at the 7th floor in the building along with other units such as the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature, Chinese Language Center, Foreign Language Center, and Center for Taiwanese Languages Testing. The College of Liberal Arts owes its gratitude to Chairman Wu Hsiu-Chi who had donated the building in 2001.

The College of Liberal Arts is established to meet with ever-changing of time and social interaction by engaging into the fields of humanity, linguistic and arts through education and research. The main goals of the College are the cultivation of understandable students, enrichment of lives, broadening international perspectives, interaction with multicultural society and elevation to the life.

The Department of Chinese Literature

The Department of Chinese Literature is located at the Northeast side in Kuang-Fu Campus. The edifice of the department is constructed within three main buildings connected by corridors and two courtyards that are equipped landscape decorations which fully resemble Chinese traditional style.

Department of Foreign Languages and Literature

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature emphasizes at the basic training of the students in in English, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, and Russian, and to thereby enhance their proficiency in the foreign languages aforementioned and also cultivate student’s understanding of western literature and culture. In addition, the Department expects the students to become critical thinkers who, broadly educated, can integrate what they have learned and adapt themselves to the ever-changing world, at the same time preparing themselves for possible academic careers.
     Future prospects of the Department include the simultaneous development in literature and linguistics fields. At the same time, the Department will participate in the Top University Programme by organizing international conferences in literature and linguistics and books publication.

The Department of History

The Department of History is located at the former building of the College of Liberal Arts, which was originally the barrack of the Japanese infantry. In 1970, the Department collaborated with the Harvard Yenching Institute in a research project on Taiwan history. Since then, the Department of History has become the leading institute in the research of Taiwan history.

The Department of Taiwanese Literature

The Department of Taiwanese Literature was founded in 2000 to promote the study of Taiwanese literature. It is one the first academic institutes in Taiwan that offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. programs in Taiwanese literature. The Department provides students with solid foundation on both literary theory and practice. In addition to teaching, other major jobs of the Department includes collecting and editing Taiwanese literary works from various historical periods in order to contribute to the development and promotion of Taiwanese literature.

The Institute of Art Studies

The Institute of Art Studies emphasizes on interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research and aims cultivating artists and researchers in terms of cultural autonomy. The institute currently provides courses in fine arts, music, drama and aesthetics.

Chinese Language Center

In response to increasing interest in learning Chinese language and culture throughout the world, National Cheng Kung University established the Chinese Language Center (CLC) in the fall of 1982 to provide the best possible opportunity for those interested in learning Mandarin Chinese. There are approximately 50 countries, 1000 foreign students here to learn Chinese Language, aged from 15 to 60. It is hoped that CLC will promote international cultural exchange, advance friendship between people of different nations.

Foreign Language Center

The Foreign Language Center of the College of Liberal Arts evolved from the “Language Laboratory of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature,” which was founded in August 1970. With gradual purchasing of audio-visual equipment and other facilities, the Center has developed into a full-fledged language center capable of serving students and faculty members of the University. In 2000, the Center moved to the current location at Hsiu-Chi Building.

Museum of History

The Museum of History is the only museum owned by an academic institute.This is the only museum owned by domestic Department of History. The relics in the museum were collected by faculties and students from the Department of History. Exhibitions are provided from time to time for the public.

Phoenix Theater and Art Gallery

Phoenix Theater and Art Gallery is located on the basement floor of Yun-Pin Building in Kuang-Fu Campus. It was built in October, 1991. The theater is equipped with 195 seats. Later, the Phoenix Art Gallery is set up in 1994. Phoenix Theater and Art Gallery provide ample space to hold performances and exhibitions. Student and teacher joint exhibitions are held each year that provide a chance for students to display their creativity outside the academic learning. The Gallery also provides the whole school and artists from outside with an area for artistic exhibition, and is a place for Tainan citizens to enjoy literary arts.

Hsiu-Chi  Auditorium

Hsiu-Chi Auditorium is located on the basement floor of Hsiu-Chi Building in Kuang-Fu Campus. It is equipped with 140 seats. All activities held by departments of College of Liberal Arts during office hours are not charged; site fees will be charged to units that are not from College of Liberal Arts.

Academic Lecture Hall

Academic Lecture Hall is on the first floor of the building of Department of Chinese Literature, located in Kuang-Fu Campus. The lecture hall is equipped with 144 seats. All activities held by departments of College of Liberal Arts during office hours are not charged; site fees will be charged to units that are not from College of Liberal Arts.

Conference Room

The Conference Room is situated on the 7th floor of Shiou-Chi Building in Kuang-Fu Campus and is equipped with 50 seats. Site fees will be charged to units that are not from College of Liberal Arts.

The Banyan Tree Garden

The Banyan Tree Garden is located at Kuang-Fu Campus. It is said that the banyans are originally imported from Kagoshima during the Japanese settlement. The large area of shade under the banyans is a fine place for relaxation and activities.

Cheng Kung Pond

The Cheng Kung Pond is situated in the center surrounded by the Department of History, Department of Chinese Literature and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. The livelihood of the greenery around the pond makes it a popular site among the faculty and students to enjoy a nice evening walk.

Hsiao Hsi Men (or "Xiao Xi-Men")

One the eight City Gates in Tainan City, Hsiao Hsi Men was built in the year 1791 and was originally located at the intersection of Hsi Men Road and Fu Chien Road. Due to roadway improvement in 1970, the gate was nearly destroyed. However, this historical structure was relocated into National Cheng Kung University under the request of the College of Liberal Arts.

Love

Artist: Kuo Wen-Lan

The artwork is located at the second floor entrance of the Hsiu-Chi Building. The artwork is constructed based on the concept to simplify the body language in order to explore the beauty of the human body.

The Pottery Wall

The Pottery Wall is dedicated to Chairman Wu Shiou-Chi as an appreciation for his contribution. It was designed by artist Ju Bang Shiung and an opening ceremony was held on 31 December 2001. It is currently situated at the second floor entrance of Hsiu-Chi building.
