演講摘要:
On 22 July 2018 the German border town of Uelsen celebrated the 400th birthday of its favorite son Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672). Nieuhof was a famous traveler who in the service of the Dutch East India Company (WIC) spent several years in Brazil, and thereupon signed up with Dutch East India Company (VOC). He participated in the first Dutch embassy to the Chinese court (1654-1657) serving as the quarter master of the Dutch envoys and their suite. During the trip to Beijing and back he made many drawings of the towns and the landscape that he passed. These drawings and his travel notes were printed in his famous book on the First Embassy to the Tartar Khan of China that was printed in 1665. This bestseller translated into many languages started of the Chinoiserie fashion in Europe. In later years Niehof also published well illustrated books on his travels in the East Indies and his stay in Brazil. In my talk I shall focus on the curious way in which his books were produced by his brother Hendrik Nieuhof in close cooperation with the then famous publisher Jacob van Meurs.
