Bio:

Dr. Brainer is Associate Professor and Director of Women's and Gender Studies and LGBTQ+ Studies at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She is the author of Queer Kinship and Family Change in Taiwan (Rutgers, 2019), for which she received the Ruth Benedict Book Prize from the Association for Queer Anthropology. Her current research follows queer and trans individuals and couples as they navigate family-based immigration to the United States.

Talk:

In this talk, Dr. Brainer will share her reasons for doing this research, its connections to her own life and identity, and some key findings and themes from the book. She will discuss ways that changes in family life - like smaller family sizes, new ideas about motherhood and fatherhood, and the distribution of work at home - matter for LGBTQ+ people and their parents, siblings, and grandparents. The formal part of the talk will be relatively short to allow for an extended Q&A and engagement with listeners.
