History
1956 College of Liberal Arts and College of Sciences were established in NCKU, with the addition of the Departments of Chinese Literature, Mathematics, and Physics.
1957 Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was Added
1967 Evening Divisions of the Departments of Chinese Literature / FLLD were added
1969 Department of History was added; College of Liberal Arts became independent
1970 Language Lab of FLLD was added
1972 Evening Division of the Dept. of History was added
1982 Chinese Division of Language Center was established under the Dept. of Chinese Literature
1983 FLLD Language Lab and Dept. of Chinese Literature Language Center now administered by the College of Liberal Arts and were respectively renamed “The Foreign Language Division” and “The hinese Language Division” of the Language Center.
1985 Graduate Institute of History and Language was added
1991 Master’s Program of the Dept. of Chinese Literature was added
1993 Master’s Degree of FLLD was added; Graduate Institute of History and Language was renamed The Graduate School of History
1994 Master’s Program of the Graduate Institute of Arts was added
1995 PhD Program of the Dept. of Chinese Literature was added
1996 PhD Program of the Dept. of History was added: all evening division programs ceased to operate and were integrated into the extension programs.
1999 Mater’s Program of Taiwanese Literature was approved to be established
2000 Extension Program of the Dept. of History ceased to operate
2001 PhD Program of Taiwanese Literature was added; On-thejob master’s program of Chinese Literature was added
2003 On-the-job master’s program of History was added
2004 The extension divisions of Chinese Literature and FLLD ceased to operate. Master’s Programs of FLLD split into two divisions: Division A for Literature and Division B for Linguistics. PhD Program for FLLD split into Literature Division and Linguistics Division
2006 On-the-job Master’s Program of Taiwanese Literature was added; Master’s Program of Modern Literature was added
2009 Foreign Language Division and Chinese Language Division of the Language Center were promoted to second level unit and were renamed “Foreign Language Center” and “Chinese Language Center” respectively. The Division of Linguistics and Foreign Language Teaching was added to the PhD Program of FLLD
2010 On-the-job Mater’s Programs of Chinese Literature, Foreign Languages and Literature and History ceased to operate.
2012 Bân-lâm bûn-hòa Research Center was established
2014 Graduate School of Archeology was added
2016 Master’s Program of Drama was created; Bân-lâm bûnhòa Research center was renamed “Multiple Cultures Research Center”.
Goals
The college of Liberal Arts inherits and follows the tradition of Tainan, the first municipality of Taiwan. Inheriting from the predecessors, and inspiring the followers, we echo the trend of time, and cater to the overall cultural development of our country and our society. We strive to cultivate talents and faculty with professional knowledge, humanistic accomplishment, social concerns and international perspectives. With these goals, all departments and centers adhere to the purpose of our curriculum, set up our teaching mission, teaching professional knowledge. Meanwhile, students are asked to develop in themselves interdisciplinary vision, independent thinking and integration ability. All these can help students meet the demands of diversity and globalization.
